Winners of the Digital Workplace of the Year award excel across the board, with ambitious strategies, robust governance, features that make a difference, deep engagement with users, and business outcomes that impress. Following the deliberations of our panel of independent judges, this year Cox Communications lifted the main award for delivering on an ambitious vision for a modern, personalized, mobile-enabled digital employee experience.

Commenting on this win in the awards event, Elizabeth Marsh said: “The digital workplace team at Cox Communications has delivered on an impressive scale, bringing together a diverse set of stakeholders across the organization to conceive a modern, integrated digital employee experience. The CoxOne intranet is a true digital workplace front door, weaving together news and information with key data and tasks from other systems to make employees’ lives easier and more productive via its highly personalized experience.”

Empowering hybrid employees

Cox Communications’ journey to an award-winning digital workplace started with the ‘before’ state of an aging platform and the need for hybrid employees to be empowered with a modern, mobile-first experience that would support productivity. It was a journey that took in a SharePoint Classic to Modern transition, better connecting news and information from across the company, and a content strategy that focuses on the role employees play in the overall goals of the organization. User research formed an integral part of this journey, with employees from across the company involved in a discovery phase, pilot testers to feedback along the way, and a Cox Engage admin community and champions to support the rollout.

Attention to detail is a hallmark for this team, with its clarity of vision and purpose really standing out for the judging panel, along with underpinning elements such as content strategy, tools and dashboards to enable content producers, and robust cross-functional governance – all carefully thought through and implemented. These best practices are now being implemented across other Cox divisions as the team seeks to unify digital experiences for all Cox employees.

Delivering personalized integrations

As well as delivering highly relevant content and communications for employees, data-rich features are woven throughout CoxOne, maximizing its usefulness as an essential part of the working day. By integrating data from areas such as HR and learning, the experience enables fast access to information such as PTO, rewards points balance and a ‘playlist’ of targeted training. Chatbot assistance helps employees in key areas of the site. In addition, the digital workplace team has simplified access to tools and ensured that the number of logins is kept to a minimum. For leaders, the upgraded CoxOne Leaders Hub, which supports managers with targeted news and information, task completion via quick access in Workday and curated learning suggestions, is a popular area of the site.

Measuring engagement and demonstrating impact

The team has a strong focus on measurement in order to understand and improve engagement with CoxOne. This has led to the development of a proprietary Engagement Index Score that allows content performance to be evaluated using a weighting structure for the various ways in which employees engage with content.

The team, with the help of a statistician, analysed this data to understand the key characteristics that make content successful. Content performance metrics slot into a wider measurement framework, created with RightPpoint, to ensure that KPIs collected map to user behaviours and activities, and ultimately to the strategic objectives.

The team’s focus on data and analytics furnishes it with some impressive impact statistics, including a 300% increase in Leaders Hub engagement, and a 20% reduction in HR queries as a result of the chatbot. It has also seen a 5% uplift in mobile engagement, with key frontline teams accessing CoxOne via mobile devices.

As this team continues to deliver on its vision for Cox Communications’ digital employee experience, the judging panel is excited to see how it will build on the impressive achievements that led to the judges naming it Digital Workplace of the Year 2023.

Jamie Stokes, Director of Digital Communications from Cox Enterprises commented on what it meant for the team to win the award: “What an amazing honor to be recognized as a DWG Digital Workplace of the Year. We are passionate about the work we do and providing employees with engaging, productive experiences. Launching the new CoxOne was more than just a platform upgrade; we took this opportunity to rethink how employees engage across our channels. Thanks to DWG for recognizing the Cox and Rightpoint teams.
