Targeted metrics that demonstrate impact
Internal Communications is, of course, concerned with the hearts and minds of the business and is increasingly being conducted in ways that can be quantified.
Digital communications and channels leave digital trails of use and, as a result, communications are becoming seemingly more measurable.
This provides an unprecedented opportunity for Internal Communications to prove their value.
However, with opportunities come commensurate risks: the risk of getting it wrong; of drawing wrong conclusions; and of choosing the wrong things to measure.
There is also a risk of getting carried away with the numbers and sacrificing quality for the sake of increasing a metric. The interpretation of the data and understanding its limitations is detailed and technical work.

About DWG research
The Digital Workplace Group (DWG) carries out research into best practice in intranet and portal deployment. Covering the hottest topics in the intranet world, the studies we undertake are rooted in practical examples from among DWG member organisations as well as leading non-member companies. The results of this in-depth research act as a basis for decision-making, a source of ideas, and the basis for rich interactions between participants at DWG meetings. Generally, members are given exclusive access to our findings, although we do from time to time make a report available to non-members for a fee.
