Many major organizations have no intranet content strategy according to new research

February 26, 2013

26 February 2013, London and New York.

The Digital Workplace Group (DWG), the world’s leading authority on intranets, has released new research into best practices for managing intranet content.

Managing Intranet Content Cover“Managing Intranet Content: A good practice guide”, issued as a resource for DWG members, reveals that more than half of all major organizations have no strategy in place for managing increasing volumes of intranet content.

The 47-page report provides practical insights and guidance for intranet managers facing a new wave of challenges, including:

  • alignment of intranet content with business strategy;
  • management of decentralized publishers;
  • how to maintain quality of content;
  • appropriate governance for user-generated content.

Angela Pohl, Managing Director
 of IBF, says: “This report looks beyond the available technologies and platforms, to detail best practices in enabling and managing good intranet content in large-scale intranet environments. Our members have been looking forward to the release of this research report, as many of them are actively working to improve content management.”

The report is released just after a blog post by Paul Miller, CEO and Founder of the Digital Workplace Group, highlighted how managing an intranet can be even more complex than managing a corporate internet site.

Other key elements of the report cover:

  • content strategy
  • publishing models
  • managing the publishing community
  • quality of content
  • managing different types of content
  • content lifecycle.

Elizabeth Marsh, Director of Research for DWG, explains: “This is an in-depth piece of research on a core area of intranet practice, featuring detailed case studies from IKEA, IBM and Ernst & Young, and is an important addition to our research library. It gives clear guidance for intranet managers grappling with a variety of issues around managing content.”

“Managing Intranet Content: A good practice guide”, authored by Kay Golan, is available exclusively for DWG member companies, although an executive summary can be downloaded for free.

About DWG research

DWG carries out research into best practices in intranet and portal deployment. Covering the hottest topics in the intranet world, the studies we undertake are rooted in practical examples from among DWG member organizations as well as other major companies. The results of this in-depth research act as a basis for decision-making, a source of ideas, and the basis for rich interactions between participants at DWG member meetings. Generally, members are given exclusive access to our findings, although we do from time to time make a report available to non-members for a fee.

DWG’s member research programme produces three major reports and three briefing papers per year on key intranet themes. All are authored by intranet experts. Research briefings and reports are available to DWG members only.
