Digital Workplace Group Awards 2025: MITRE – Winner for Sustained Digital Innovation

September 17, 2025 by

Amongst an awards cohort defined by bold digital transformation, MITRE stands out as a beacon of enduring vision and operational excellence. As the winner of a 2025 Digital Workplace Group Award for Sustained Digital Innovation, MITRE’s MII (MITRE Information Infrastructure) platform exemplifies what it means to build a digital workplace that not only supports, but amplifies, an organization’s mission and impact.

Now in their eighth year, the awards are produced by DWG and celebrate organizations and teams that have excelled in creating well-executed, high-performing digital workplace environments. A visionary digital twin

Judges praised MITRE for creating “a visionary digital twin of the enterprise that integrates over 50 systems across a 30-year span”. This foundational model links people, organizations and projects, enabling rapid discovery of expertise and knowledge across domains. The MII’s architecture is more than technology – it’s a living, breathing reflection of MITRE’s culture of experimentation and early adoption.

AI-powered collaboration and knowledge

MITRE’s commitment to innovation is evident in its pioneering use of AI. The MII now includes an AI assistant and a federal AI sandbox, supporting 95% of employees in their daily work. “MITRE is strong in articulating strategic vision, operational excellence and reuse of knowledge,” noted the judges. By codifying expertise and enabling swift responses to sponsor needs, MITRE empowers teams to avoid duplication and apply proven solutions at scale.

Impact at scale

With over 5,400 daily homepage users and more than 200,000 monthly people searches, MII is mission-critical. The people pages alone were accessed by 95% of employees in the past year, underscoring the platform’s centrality to daily work. “It supports rapid response and collaboration,” said the judges, highlighting how the MII accelerates decision making and fosters a culture of self-service and autonomy.

Looking ahead: The next evolution

As MITRE celebrates the 30th anniversary of the MII, the organization is not resting on its laurels. Plans are underway to transform the platform into an ecosystem of intelligent AI agents, capable of automating tasks and enhancing decision making. “The architecture enables AI to lead to personalization and enhanced associate experience,” judges observed. This aligns with MITRE’s broader Enterprise Technology strategy, emphasizing modernization, security and operational excellence.

Conclusion

MITRE’s journey is a testament to the power of sustained innovation, strategic vision and a relentless focus on impact. The MII is not just an intranet – it’s a strategic asset, continuously evolving to meet the needs of a dynamic organization. As MITRE celebrates three decades of digital leadership, its story offers rich inspiration for peers across the digital workplace community.
