BNY Mellon’s Digital Workplace of the Year 2017 – why it won
Strong performance across all the award criteria made BNY Mellon’s digital workplace a clear winner in the 2017 Awards, announced in June. It was hard to fault either the ambitious, business-focused strategy or the accompanying robust governance framework with its clear roles, groups and responsibilities. BNY Mellon’s approach to user engagement also made an impression, with a range of approaches employed to ensure the user voice is at the heart of digital workplace developments.

Ambitious strategy and all-encompassing governance
BNY Mellon’s ambitious digital workplace strategy has a clear, business-focused goal to: “transform our worldwide employees’ workplace experience with the digital solutions necessary to be productive, knowledgeable and engaged, helping them to deliver exceptional service to BNY Mellon’s clients and partners.”
The judges were impressed by the breadth of the 2017 vision, which encompasses not only work on collaboration and self-service, but also includes specific initiatives relating to improving productivity and digital literacy.
This strategy is underpinned by a governance model that impressed the judges to such an extent that they gave it one of the highest scores across the competition. All aspects of governance appear to have been thought out in detail and implemented in a robust manner: from steering committee and advisory board to champions network.
Engaging users in multiple ways
For the digital workplace team at BNY Mellon, employees are customers whose input is valued and sought via a number of means:

- virtual Ask Me Anything (AMA) sessions
- Open Door sessions
- digital cafés
- community support.
Users can also get support in a variety of ways including e-learning, technology expos and webinars. The relentless focus on customer needs and the way this helps shape digital workplace strategy impressed the judges.
Metrics that matter
Asking an intranet or digital workplace manager for measurement data often elicits little more than a guilty look and a mumbled response about page views. Not so with the BNY Mellon entry!
The judges were wowed with the “strong supporting metrics” and “impressive accomplishments” they demonstrated in their supporting documents. Not surprising given their array of convincing metrics across KPIs of performance, adoption and usage, and customer satisfaction.
The team’s accomplishments range across digital platform enhancements, collaboration and communication, engagement, support and operational improvements, and innovation – each backed up with a range of meaningful metrics including Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) enablement, social activity, user satisfaction and effectiveness.
