DWG’s 2026 predictions and the stories behind them

Dear Diary and Dear Fellow Travellers on the Digital Journey!
As the final pages of 2025 come together, I’m sitting in front of my Diary once again with my thinking cap on, and my heart on my sleeve. The past year has felt a lot like the end of a long relay race. Thanks to everyone who has picked up the baton along the way!
Looking back along the road we’ve run, and counting the flags we’ve planted along the way, it’s been gratifying to see that 8½ out of 10 of the 2025 predictions were realized. I covered this retrospective review in the last edition of Diary of a She-E-O, in case you missed it.
Today’s Diary entry asks the simplest, yet hardest, ponderable of all: Did we learn anything?
The short answer is: We did!
Relevant stories have come back to me from practitioners around the world: of late-night whiteboard sessions where a change-agile team turned what looked like chaos into the next collaboration breakthrough; of moments when the AI in your chat box started to whisper solutions you hadn’t even thought to ask for; of the thrill of cutting through the noise to find clarity in your inbox, in your team’s feedback and in the mission you signed up for.
These stories have been honest, unvarnished and carried on the shoulders of human beings doing the work. They are why we gather, why we cast a scorecard, and why we shout out what comes next. The Diary reminds us that storytelling isn’t a fad; it’s the lifeline that connects us when everything else feels like a blur – which brings us to 2026!
The 2026 predictions and the stories behind them
- Micro strategies become the flywheel for continuous change.
Thriving in a world of relentless disruption isn’t about grand gestures; it’s about the power of the small. The secret to perpetual motion isn’t a big bang but a cadence of well-executed, bite-sized moves: micro-content, micro-tasking, micro-learning, micro-deliverables and micro-coaching. Each tiny action spins the flywheel faster, building momentum for agility and innovation. Early adopters like Unilever and Deloitte aren’t waiting for sweeping transformation – they’re seizing today, proving that the micro makes the macro possible. This isn’t a trend; it’s the invisible engine behind lasting transformation. - Liquid experiences emerge as the next frontier for digital workplaces.
Static, monolithic platforms belong to the past. The next frontier is ‘liquid’. It centres around dynamic, context-aware, human-centred interactions that flow seamlessly across devices, channels and environments. Liquid experiences meet you where you are: on your phone, at your desk, on a walk in the park; physically, digitally and emotionally. They dissolve silos, empower personalization at scale and harness AI thoughtfully. Think of a document that travels with you from laptop to tablet, a notification that knows when to interrupt and when to stay silent. Liquid is about flow: the flow of information, ideas and belonging. - Lean digital workplace management becomes the new gold standard. 2026 will see lean management celebrated as a badge of honour. HR, IT and communications will stop measuring success by headcount and start measuring it by intelligence embedded into workflows. Governance, tagging and analytics will be automated by AI instead of consuming armies of people. Nimble, multidisciplinary teams will design systems for velocity and precision. American Express and Adobe are already writing the playbook: moving from cluttered operations to adaptive, insight-driven ecosystems. Efficiency isn’t about more people; it’s about better systems.
- Clarity becomes the connective tissue of thriving digital workplaces. We live in an avalanche of feedback: pulse surveys, dashboards, AI insights, real-time chat. And yet one element grows increasingly precious: clarity. It’s not just a leadership trait; it’s a new social currency. By the end of 2026, clarity will shape how we interpret feedback, adopt technology and cultivate culture. When clarity underpins every interaction, individuals and teams move confidently from noise to meaningful action. Clarity fuels trust, sparks innovation and lays the foundation for sustainable growth.
- AI agents become strategic co-workers for a fresh take on hybrid. Hybrid work is no longer a logistical puzzle; it’s a strategic invitation. A new class of digital teammates is emerging: AI agents. These systems don’t just check off tasks; they co-author your day. They analyse complex data, manage workflows, learn your preferences and maintain context across continents. The machine isn’t replacing you. It’s sitting at the table beside you, opening space for your humanity to dance with opportunity… to unlock your superpowers.
- Democratized coaching becomes the foundation for a future-ready, agile workforce.
When disruption is the norm and agility the currency, rigid hierarchies and annual reviews won’t cut it. The future belongs to those who can learn, adapt and thrive in real time. Democratized coaching opens feedback for everyone, not just the C-suite. Frequent, informal coaching moments delivered in the flow of work help people align with shared goals while building resilience. Flip the old model on its head and watch your organization swell with confidence and curiosity. - Sustainability finally gets its moment in the sun.
The drumbeat around sustainability used to lie at the periphery; now it’s centre stage. The Campbell’s Company proved that care for the planet and efficiency can be two sides of the same coin. It is optimizing PC lifecycles, cutting energy consumption and slashing costs. Sustainability isn’t an afterthought any more; it’s a core design principle. Efficiency, equity and excellence belong together. - Open innovation breaks new ground for digital workplaces.
Closed ecosystems and proprietary thinking are dead ends. The next frontier is open innovation: co-creating solutions across boundaries, sharing knowledge freely and tapping into collective intelligence. Map your ecosystem for openness, embed governance that welcomes ideas without sacrificing security, and invite voices from outside your four walls. Open innovation isn’t a buzzword; it’s the foundation for future-ready workplaces. - A new breed of leaders harness the power of human ingenuity and artificial intelligence.
A new era of leadership has arrived. It isn’t about humans versus machines; it’s about humans and machines working side by side. Leaders who embrace this collaboration set the pace for innovation and growth. The question isn’t whether AI will shape the future of work. It already does. The real question is: Will you lead the way in harnessing human ingenuity and artificial intelligence together? - AI governance becomes a board-level priority. Time to ladder up!
AI is everywhere – powering analytics, automating decisions and shaping experiences. That ubiquity delivers magic but also casts shadows. Without robust governance, you risk bias, privacy lapses and reputational damage. AI governance isn’t a ‘nice to have’. It belongs at the boardroom table. Audit your ecosystem, define clear principles and make governance a strategic enabler for trust and innovation.
The super prediction as a wrapper
The digital workplace is entering a bold new phase in 2026 – one defined not by tools, but by intelligence. It is evolving into a sentient ecosystem: an intelligent, adaptive and emotionally aware environment that anticipates needs, personalizes experiences and orchestrates work across channels, roles and contexts.
For years, organizations have focused on making their digital workplaces smarter through automation, AI and collaboration platforms. But the next frontier is sentience: a workplace that understands context, intent and emotion.
This transformation is being fuelled by the convergence of trends:
- Generative AI maturity: AI is shifting from generic chatbots to embedded, domain-specific agents integrated directly into productivity platforms such as Teams, Asana and Notion.
- Ambient intelligence: Context-aware systems are enabling enterprises to sense, interpret and respond to human behaviour without explicit input.
- Emotional AI: Advanced technologies now detect tone, sentiment and stress, paving the way for emotionally responsive digital interactions.
Step into DWG’s drive-in double feature
Let’s have some fun with our super prediction that 2026 marks the birth of the sentient digital workplace. To bring this idea to life, I’m putting two film legends head to head for a critics’ choice based on today’s double feature drive-in.
First up is Ironman. Tony Stark is the ultimate example of human and machine working together. His suit is more than technology; it’s a sentient partner that anticipates needs, adapts in real time and amplifies human potential. The sentient digital workplace, like Ironman’s world, will be powered by seamless AI integration, real-time data and adaptive systems. It’s about technology as a co-worker, a coach and a catalyst for innovation. Ironman shows us how intelligence, both artificial and human, can solve complex problems and help people and organizations to thrive.
On the other hand, there is Jerry Maguire. Jerry’s story is about heart, relationships and purpose. He stands for meaningful work, where empathy, trust and authentic connection drive success. The sentient digital workplace, like Jerry, puts people at the centre – listening, learning and responding to individual needs. It’s not just about smart tech, but about building trust, clarity and a culture where everyone can say “You complete me!” Jerry Maguire reminds us that the future of work doesn’t boil down to “Show me the money”. Success is sweeter when it is as much about emotional intelligence as it is about artificial intelligence. So, which film reference best captures the spirit of the sentient digital workplace? Let’s have some fun and launch a great debate. Cast your vote and tell us your why!
Are you team Ironman, the tech-powered visionary?
Tagline: “The digital workplace as your Ironman suit: always on, always learning, always one step ahead.”
Or are you team Jerry Maguire, the champion of human connection?
Tagline: “The digital workplace as your Jerry Maguire: showing you the meaning, the connection and the ‘why’ behind every action.”
A final thought
2026 isn’t just a calendar year. It’s a space for a new mindset. It’s the invitation to weave technology into a human-centred fabric… to write the next chapter with empathy as much as with algorithms… to move from noise to clarity and from concept to co-creation.
Whether you’re Team Iron Man or Team Jerry Maguire, we’re all in the same future-bound cars. The road ahead is lit. The engines are humming. Let’s drive.
