John Flannery of XL Group joined the Digital Workplace 24 team to share how XL had recently redefined their intranet. With 60 offices across 20 countries, key drivers for the new intranet were enabling intelligence to be leveraged across the group and embracing a culture of entrepreneurial spirit. The move away from the typical navigation used on intranets, to the prominence of a central search box, immediately sparked a discussion with the studio host Paul Miller. An approach adopted by several other organisations recently, is this the start of a trend to a new intranet style?
In redefining the intranet, XL wanted to be “bold, open and innovative” and their “big-bang” approach to implementation clearly made a statement around this intent. Any initial resistance has been quickly overcome with employees supported through training, videos and help areas to create the right environment. Using Groups to drive collaboration, the team at XL have seen huge organic take up with 500 groups established in 6 months.
Current challenges which the team are now focussing on include
- employee profiles – not enough profile data input yet to make a useful tool and exploring how to make it useful to the individual to drive this behaviour
- decentralised publishing model – huge challenge as relies on tagging etc.
Through all of this, the resounding message was that “content is key!”.
