How WestJet built its first mobile app for employees
When they started the project, the WestJet team had never built a mobile app before. Where do you start? What should the app do? How do we build it well? How should it connect to our enterprise systems?
The WestJet team encountered all these questions and many more. But through focus and strong product management methodologies they were able to go from a blank sheet of paper to a fully functioning, very popular mobile app for employees in just nine months. When the WestJet CEO demoed the app, he was fully impressed.
See the app and hear how they did it on the August 5th episode of Digital Workplace Live.

An airline people love and employees love working for
WestJet isn’t just another airline.
The company’s mission statement reads “to enrich the lives of everyone in WestJet’s world by providing safe, friendly and affordable air travel”. This sort of mission recognizes that WestJet’s impact goes far beyond just profit and stakeholder returns.
A deep commitment to its employees and customer service has earned WestJet a plethora of awards and industry recognition, including:
- Top spot in Waterstones’ study of Canada’s 10 Most Admired Corporate Cultures for four years.
- Inducted into the Waterstone Hall of Fame in 2009.
- Designated a J.D. Power Customer Service Champion in 2011 (one of two companies in Canada and the only airline to make the list).
- Ranked third in Aon Hewitt’s Best Employers in Canada.
- Chosen as the Canadian airline with the best flight attendants by flightnetwork.com.
- Chosen as Canada’s preferred airline multiple years.
This video is a great example of what makes WestJet special:
If you look at past episodes of Digital Workplace Live you’ll see an interesting pattern starting to emerge: some of the most thoughtfully implemented intranet examples come from companies with very special cultures and values. A recent intranet tour from SAS and another intranet tour from Suncor are both good examples.
Is a commitment to employees and to the “triple bottom line” a prerequisite for having a great intranet and strong digital workplace strategy? No. Is there some sort of correlation? You decide…
