Documenting intranet management practices

18 June 2016

DWG’s new research “Documenting intranet management practices: A guide to the key elements” looks at what intranet managers need to think about when defining and documenting intranet management practices. It draws on best DWG benchmarking insights as well as best practice from members to provide guidance on key considerations and elements when developing: intranet strategy, roadmap, governance framework, content strategy as well as other supporting strategies.

While documenting these practices does not guarantee success, and is only one aspect of the wider process of managing the intranet, DWG Strategy and Governance benchmarking often recommends this as an area where teams need to improve. Doing so can provide a firm basis for clarity and effectiveness in how the intranet is managed and decisions taken.

The purpose of this research is to help intranet managers who are looking to improve in this area by outlining the key elements of core intranet management documents. Each organization will be unique in the specific elements it will want to include and to emphasize, so the outlines given are meant as a starting point to guide members as they develop their own documents. It also provides links to other DWG research that offer guidance on the wider process of defining strategy, putting in place robust governance etc.

About DWG research

The Digital Workplace Group (DWG) carries out research into best practice in intranet and portal deployment. Covering the hottest topics in the intranet world, the studies we undertake are rooted in practical examples from among DWG member organizations as well as leading non-member companies. The results of this in-depth research act as a basis for decision-making, a source of ideas, and the basis for rich interactions between participants at DWG meetings. Generally, members are given exclusive access to our findings, although we do from time to time make a report available to non-members.
