IBF changes Twitter username to parent company, @DWG

December 17, 2013

First of all, did you know that Twitter can change your username without you losing your followers or account history?

We just learned that because… we did it. The Intranet Benchmarking Forum (IBF) has changed its Twitter handle to @DWG, which stands for IBF’s parent company, the Digital Workplace Group.

IBF Twitter followers: no changes needed

If you already follow IBF you now follow @DWG. Voilà!

Because Twitter has simply changed the IBF username to “DWG” our account is virtually the same. You’ll keep seeing our tweets in your stream and we’ll keep sharing as much good stuff as we can.

The only change is that if you want to find us on Twitter or mention us, you’ll need to remember to type @DWG, not @IBF.

Here, let’s practice it a few times:

  1. @IBF is now @DWG
  2. Eye-bee-eff is now dee-double-you-gee
  3. @IBF @DWG
  4. Who you gonna tweet? @DWG

What you can expect from the DWG Twitter account

In a nutshell, the reincarnated IBF Twitter account will be much the same as it is now. We will try to offer a steady flow of useful and interesting material related to intranets and the digital workplace, from our own blog and many other trusted sources.

From the DWG Twitter account look for:

  • IBF blog posts about intranets and the wider digital workplace, including expert analysis and guidance, research and events
  • articles from around the web about intranets and the digital workplace
  • articles about related topics, such as healthy work habits, employee engagement, innovative leadership and more.

Addressing profile proliferation

We are changing the IBF Twitter username to DWG for two main reasons: 1) to increase awareness of our parent company and 2) to consolidate our Twitter accounts.

IBF has two sister companies (the Digital Workplace Forum and DWG Consulting Services) and belongs to a parent company (the Digital Workplace Group), which had several other Twitter accounts.

We’ve kept the IBF and DWF Twitter accounts very active over the years. When the DWG Twitter account became available, we snatched it up. But rather than tweet from a third account, we decided to roll IBF and DWF into the DWG account.

Simple. One Twitter account to follow, lots of great stuff to see.

(Also we can finally stop receiving the occasional mistaken tweets people meant to send to the International Boxing Federation.)

Digital workplace: intranets plus…

Changing our Twitter username reflects the general direction our industry is going.

A few years ago an intranet manager only oversaw the intranet. For most companies the intranet was an information repository and a channel for top-down internal communications.

The popularization of social software and mobile smart telephones has in short order expanded the purview of intranet managers beyond just the intranet. That job has become much broader and more complex.

Additionally, forward-thinking executives see their company’s wider digital workplace as a potential competitive advantage. When it’s well designed and cohesive it improves employee productivity and satisfaction. A strong internal digital brand can attract top talent and often reflects a more innovative company culture.

Amidst all of this change, though, intranets are still incredibly important. As our own Chris Tubb recently wrote, intranets provide structure, control and consistency in the digital workplace – a role that no other tool is positioned to do.

So, follow @DWG, connect with @DWG and look for plenty of useful content from our Twitter coffers.
