What does a good governance framework look like?
Over the years, governance has been foundational to the successful intranet and is now so for digital workplaces too.
At its heart are the policies, processes, rules and guidelines that allow the digital workplace to work in an optimum way – effectively balancing the control and coordination that central teams need to establish with the ability for local teams to operate successfully within the digital workplace.
Getting it right is not easy. Some teams struggle to implement robust governance. Governance can also change over time as stakeholders come and go, as needs change and as new platforms are introduced. It’s also quite a dry topic – did anyone ever get really excited about governance?
Governance is a topic that has preoccupied digital workplace teams. It’s a subject that comes up again and again in DWG member meetings, in our webinars and in our research programme. We have seen many members get it right and overcome the challenges though; by establishing good governance they set the foundations for a great digital workplace and intranet.

About DWG research
The Digital Workplace Group (DWG) carries out research into best practice in intranet and portal deployment. Covering the hottest topics in the intranet world, the studies we undertake are rooted in practical examples from among DWG member organizations as well as leading non-member companies. The results of this in-depth research act as a basis for decision-making, a source of ideas, and the basis for rich interactions between participants at DWG meetings. Generally, members are given exclusive access to our findings, although we do from time to time make a report available to non-members.
