How to make your intranet search actually work

28 July 2022

One of the fundamental jobs of a great digital workplace or an intranet is to allow employees to find what they need in the most painless way possible. Central to this is an effective intranet search feature, which helps users quickly locate documents, resources, and information without frustration. Optimizing intranet search functionality not only boosts productivity but also enhances user satisfaction by making the digital workplace more intuitive and efficient.

Employees not being able to find tools, content or people is inefficient and highly frustrating. There are several related strands to any findability strategy, including establishing navigation, making content more findable, and search. Of these, perhaps search is the hardest. In the wider context of the digital workplace, with increasing amounts of data, multiple applications in use, and both structured and unstructured content, there can be challenges in setting up a search that satisfies as many needs as possible.

However, there are several approaches that teams can follow to move the needle on search and
successfully connect employees to the content, apps and people they need in order to be more
effective in their working day.

This free whitepaper explains the different elements that go into search, reveals overlooked tactics that can make the difference, and uncovers the concepts behind the changing nature of search.

About DWG research

The Digital Workplace Group (DWG) carries out research into best practice in intranet and portal deployment. Covering the hottest topics in the intranet world, the studies we undertake are rooted in practical examples from among DWG member organizations as well as leading non-member companies. The results of this in-depth research act as a basis for decision-making, a source of ideas, and the basis for rich interactions between participants at DWG meetings. Generally, members are given exclusive access to our findings, although we do from time to time make a report available to non-members.
